SAN DIEGO (Reuters) – A crowd of 15,000 fans celebrated the life of former football star Junior Seau in a memorial on Friday at a San Diego stadium, as they cheered on his grieving family and listened to speakers describe his generosity and sense of humor. Seau, regarded as one of the best defensive NFL players of his generation, died on May 2 at his home in Oceanside, just north of San Diego, from a self-inflicted gunshot to the chest, according to police. He left no suicide note.

Before it became clear that Peyton Manning was going to miss the 2011 NFL season, one of the biggest points of contention swirling around the Indianapolis Colts was what to do with running back Joseph Addai. Offensive tackle Thomas Welch was claimed by the Eagles off waivers from the Rams. Welch, 24, played in three games for the Patriots last season while bouncing between the practice squad and the active roster several times. He was originally a seventh-round pick by New England in 2010, and spent most of his rookie season on Minnesota’s practice squad.

SAN DIEGO (Reuters) – Medical authorities conducted an autopsy on Thursday on the body of Junior Seau, a day after the former star San Diego Chargers linebacker died of an apparent suicide in his beach front California home, a coroner’s official said. Results from the autopsy, which will include a routine examination of his brain, were expected to be released later in the day, San Diego County Medical Examiner’s office spokeswoman Sarah Gordon said. Seau’s girlfriend found him on Wednesday unconscious in a bedroom of his home with a gunshot wound to the chest. …
